Green Onion Bamboo

Botanical Name: Pseudosasa japonica tsutsumiana

Pseudosasa japonica ‘Tsutsumiana’, also known as Green Onion Bamboo, is a variety known for its distinctive characteristics, such as its green onion-like appearance and its use as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes. It’s a running bamboo native to Japan and prized for its elegant foliage and ability to form dense, lush clumps. Like other bamboo, it’s a versatile plant that can be used for screening, hedging, or as a focal point in a garden. Its name, ‘Tsutsumiana’, likely refers to its unique appearance, with ‘Tsutsumi’ meaning ‘to wrap’ or ‘to enclose’ in Japanese, possibly alluding to how its foliage wraps around its culms (stems).

Appearance of Green Onion Bamboo

Pseudosasa japonica tsutsumiana leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and vibrant green, resembling the leaves of green onions or scallions. They grow densely along the culms (stems), creating a lush and attractive appearance. The slender culms (stems) can reach heights of around 2 to 3 meters

Growth Habits and Care

This bamboo has a running or spreading growth habit, sending underground rhizomes that can spread and colonise new areas. It’s important to plant it with containment measures in place, such as barriers, to prevent it from spreading uncontrollably. Like most bamboo, ‘Tsutsumiana’ requires minimal maintenance once established. It benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods, and occasional fertilisation to promote healthy growth. Pruning may be necessary to remove dead or damaged culms and to control its spread if needed.

Suitability for Australian Landscapes

When it comes to Australian landscapes, the Green Onion Bamboo, or ‘Tsutsumiana ‘, is a reliable choice. Its dense foliage and attractive appearance make it a popular landscaping option for various purposes. It can serve as a privacy screen, hedge, or border plant. It’s a favourite in Japanese-style gardens, adding a touch of elegance with its graceful form and foliage. Pseudosasa japonica ‘Tsutsumiana’ is generally considered hardy and adaptable, able to tolerate a range of soil types and environmental conditions, from partial shade to full sun. It can even withstand temperatures as low as -21°c. ‘Green Onion bamboo’ is a beautiful and versatile bamboo variety that adds a unique and eye-catching element to gardens and landscapes. However, its spreading nature should be considered when planting to prevent it from becoming invasive. Pseudosasa japonica tsutsumiana can be successfully grown in planters or pots. It is perfect for balconies, patios, or courtyards where space is limited.
