Square Bamboo

Botanical Name: Chimonobambusa quadrangularis

Chimonobambusa quadrangularis, commonly known as Square Bamboo or Green Square Bamboo, is a species of bamboo native to parts of East Asia, particularly China and Japan. It belongs to the grass family Poaceae and, as the name suggests, its culms (stems) are distinctly square, which sets it apart from other bamboo species. This distinct feature adds to its visual appeal, making it a popular choice for ornamental purposes due to its unique square culms (stems) and attractive appearance. The culms of Chimonobambusa quadrangularis are vibrant green, especially in their early growth stages. As they mature, they develop a brownish-green hue, giving the bamboo a unique visual appeal. The culm surface is smooth and glossy.

Appearance of Square Bamboo

Typically reaching a height of about 4-5 meters, it is a relatively compact bamboo variety. The leaves of Chimonobambusa quadrangularis are medium to dark green in colour and lanceolate in shape. They are arranged alternately along the culms (stems), creating an attractive clumping effect.

In addition to its aesthetic appeal, Square bamboo also serves practical purposes. Its culms (stems) are not just for show. Although not as widely cultivated as some bamboo species, Chimonobambusa quadrangularis has gained recognition among bamboo enthusiasts and botanical gardens for its unique characteristics and versatile applications in both traditional and modern settings.

Growth Habits and Care of Square Bamboo

Chimonobambusa quadrangularis is a running bamboo species known to spread and develop extensive underground rhizome systems, allowing it to propagate rapidly and potentially be invasive. However, with proper containment methods, its growth can be managed effectively. Regarding cultivation, square bamboo thrives in temperate climates with moderate humidity and well-drained soil. It prefers partial shade and regular watering to maintain optimal growth. While it can tolerate some cold temperatures, protection from frost is advisable in colder regions.

Suitability for Australian Landscapes

This bamboo species is prized for its ornamental value and is often used in landscaping and garden design for its unique appearance. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil and prefers partial shade, making it suitable for various garden environments. Unlike clumping bamboos, running bamboos can spread over a larger area if not properly managed. Therefore, It is important to consider containment methods when planting running bamboo species like Square bamboo. It can be grown in Planters and Pots for people with limited space. It is known to grow at a rate of around 2 to 5 feet per year. Like many bamboo species, square bamboo is used to restore habitats due to its fast growth and extensive root system. Apart from its aesthetic appeal, square bamboo has various practical uses. Its culms are utilised in construction, crafts, and even musical instruments. Additionally, Like many bamboo species, it contributes to environmental conservation efforts by preventing soil erosion, providing habitat for wildlife, and absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Some people also use the culms for decorative purposes.
