Autumn is here and now is the time to get some bamboo in the garden before winter sets in. Now is a great time to plant bamboo. Bamboo loves the sun and it loves a bit of water. Clumping bamboo will generally start to shoot late summer or early autumn here in Victoria. You should see many new culms start appearing from now until winter. Over winter they will probably quieten down a little but people still have seen new growth over the winter period.
To enhance the new culms and keep it looking healthy and green, feed them with a high Nitrogen fertiliser. Drown the bamboo with water once you have fertilised. Keep watering the plant and do not let it dry out. Another way to keep your bamboo looking great is to spray the foliage with Charlie Carp or Seasol about every 2 weeks.
Hedge bamboo is a clumping type of bamboo with a maximum height of about 4 metres. It really bushes out making it a great bamboo for hedging. For more details visit our Hedge bamboo page.
